Learning Agreement - BA6

Learning Agreement (My Project Intentions)

BA6: Specialism

This text details what I intend to explore and achieve as my BA6 Project submission - hopefully this will put some of my posts into context!

Proposal:  What do you intend to do?

Use this area to outline the intended project.

What; My project will cover the processes and theories of modelling through an in-depth investigation of prop modeling from start to finish. I will research into Work Pipelines, polygon budget modeling, texture painting, UV mapping, normal and specular maps, use of lighting, shaders and rendering for presentation of the model. I will not be taking my model into game-engine as part of this brief; however I will include efficiency considerations in my model (such as inward/hidden faces etc.)

Why; My work will be based on Primary Visual Research carried out at Norwich Castle Museum. This visual research will inform my conceptual work as I plan to model a prop based on a historical object. The reason I am choosing inspiration from the past, is that I want my work to explore the role of 3D modeling as a form of preservation for historical objects. By modeling an object from history, it becomes no longer vulnerable to decay, and damage and so is preserved far more effectively than any museum can achieve. 3D models can then be reproduced, and shared for future generations to learn from in a medium they will understand, and this brings up the topic of replication in modern culture. Baudrillard’s Theory of Simulation will inform my research into this topic, and I will use his theory as a starting point for my further investigation into the role of 3D modeling as a form of preservation, and its role as a simulation.

How; I will achieve my target of a professionally realised 3D model through strict time-management, thorough research of the topics listed above, and regular contact with my tutors at the timetabled 2D and 3D Drop-in sessions. My schedule is as detailed as possible, so to give a realistic representation of my time, and I have left a week at the end of my schedule to allow for any unforeseen hold-ups.

Robin Silcock

I am a Second Year Games Art and Design student at Norwich University of the Arts. After exploration of a number of roles in my first year, I am now looking to graduate as a 3D Artist with applicable skills in Maya, Mudbox, ZBrush and Photoshop. I understand that my skills in this field are not there yet - but I aim to achieve this goal through consistently working through the programs in my University and Personal Projects. I love to be busy - I have always had a lot of things on my plate since the age of 7 where I successfully balanced school with Ballet, Tap, Horse-Riding, French, Piano and Singing Lessons! In the same fashion, my university schedule is just as hectic and varied; I am a Peer Mentor to first year students, Student Rep for Second Year, and President of the Enterprise Society. Like I said, I love to be busy! I am a Games Hippie - so to speak - I believe that Games if designed and harnessed in the right way, will be able to help solve many of the global issues we have today - even if it starts off in a small way. Just look at the positive effects that Facebook and Twitter have already had... When navigating my blog;
  • Works in Progress - This section is a constantly running account of all my current projects - personal and for university. It will contain reference images and website links and sometimes less than coherent posts, so be prepared!
  • Finished Pieces - This is where you will find my more polished artwork. Looking for help with Maya? Check out the posts tagged "Maya How-To's"
