CS Presentation Research

My CS question is:

"How coherent is the relationship between Game and Real Worlds with regards to Brain-Training and Educational Games?"

Supplementary questions to be covered in my talk are;

A) "How does a Game's Design make it an Effective Learning Tool?"
B) "Can Games change Real Life for the Better?"
C) "Why are Games Designed for Learning?"

Here is the annotated Bibliography of my CS Research;

This TED Talk by Jane McGonigal explores the topic of how by channelling the skills and enthusiasm of world wide gamers into solving the planet's problems we can create a better world. The second TED Talk by her below showcases her ramified website program - 'SuperBetter' - which encourages members to use her site and motivate themselves to achieve life goals through 'playing on the site'. Below that talk is a link to the SuperBetter site.

I actually have been using this website personally to try and make sure I exercise regularly when spending time at the computer. I found that if I was using the website regularly I did remember to exercise more and take breaks from the screen - though if I did not have the website open I soon slipped back into bad habits. So how can a game affect our world when not in direct contact with the player? Can a brain training game re-wire our thinking, or merely train it to the game and not life?

On the topic of Jane McGonigal, I looked at a few sections of her book 'Reality is Broken' which cover how games can make a player happy and how the games' design harnesses this.
McGonical, J, 2011. Reality is Broken. 1st ed. California: Vintage.

Another book I have looked at for research was Koster's wonderful book;
Koster, R, 2005. A Theory of Fun. 1st ed. Arizona: Paraglyph Press.
The Chapters I looked at were;
- CHAPTER TWO: How the Brain Works  - Page 12
- CHAPTER FOUR: What Games Teach Us - Page 48
- CHAPTER SEVEN: The Problem with Learning - Page 110
- CHAPTER ELEVEN: Where Games Should Go - Page 172

Donovan's book has influenced my research by encouraging me to look back at how games have influenced their players in the past. In particular 2 instances; Page 317 'Learn from Lei Feng Online' a 2006 Chinese game created with the intention of teaching it's players to be like Lei Feng who was championed for his devotion to Maoism.
Page 338 - How the launch of the DS brought with it a new era of brain-training gaming and with them, a new demographic of a more mature gamer than seen before for hand-helds.

Donovan, T, 2010. Replay: The History of Video Games. 1st ed. Sussex: Yellow Ant Publishing.

Robin Silcock

I am a Second Year Games Art and Design student at Norwich University of the Arts. After exploration of a number of roles in my first year, I am now looking to graduate as a 3D Artist with applicable skills in Maya, Mudbox, ZBrush and Photoshop. I understand that my skills in this field are not there yet - but I aim to achieve this goal through consistently working through the programs in my University and Personal Projects. I love to be busy - I have always had a lot of things on my plate since the age of 7 where I successfully balanced school with Ballet, Tap, Horse-Riding, French, Piano and Singing Lessons! In the same fashion, my university schedule is just as hectic and varied; I am a Peer Mentor to first year students, Student Rep for Second Year, and President of the Enterprise Society. Like I said, I love to be busy! I am a Games Hippie - so to speak - I believe that Games if designed and harnessed in the right way, will be able to help solve many of the global issues we have today - even if it starts off in a small way. Just look at the positive effects that Facebook and Twitter have already had... When navigating my blog;
  • Works in Progress - This section is a constantly running account of all my current projects - personal and for university. It will contain reference images and website links and sometimes less than coherent posts, so be prepared!
  • Finished Pieces - This is where you will find my more polished artwork. Looking for help with Maya? Check out the posts tagged "Maya How-To's"
