The French soldiers are holding the Nazis at bay whilst the British are retreating. The brother is part of an elite task force which are then dropped into France in order to intercept french forces and effectively work on the inside collecting intelligence from the french front lines for the British military back in England. (Inspiration from a unit which were left behind at Dunkirk which were massacred by the Germans - we want to re-write this bit of history and have the British captured troops kill the Germans who had captured them (for example a bomb goes off nearby distracting them etc) the British then take on the roles of these Germans and work as spys for the British)

This is where the Canadians and the English do their 'hit and run' of Dieppe. The Germans then mis-interpret these beach offenses as the British trying to take over Nazi-occupied France and decide to once more launch an attack on England. This is where the British spies in the German forces break cover and then fight on the side of the British.
