Annabel becomes Alice (all be it for an experiment)

I began thinking about little Annabel over the weekend, and was wondering why she seemed so familiar to me. It is often the case that when you endeavor to produce something unique and from your individual imagination, it later becomes an amalgamation of memories. These memories could be from a magazine, art gallery, TV advert, a book - you name it. The same occurs with music; one minute you're jamming away to your own tune and it suddenly occurs to you that you've slipped into the chord sequence of the National Anthem.

Well.... Annabel is familiar to me because she is exactly how I imagined the child-heroine of a fantasy novel I read a few months ago. "The Toy Sorcerer" by Laura Hart features Alice - a head strong protagonist which has to battle through various vistas in the Dream Realms in order to save the Modern World. Humankind has been ensnared by nightmares - everyone's worst fears become real once they succumb to slumber, leaving people scared to sleep. This is a very clever weapon to wield against Mankind as sleep-deprivation makes light work of undoing ones sense of reality, grasp on emotions, and physical control. Rendering us useless, and vulnerable to attack.

Although Alice is young, she has had to grow up fast after losing her mother and brother in a horrific car accident just a year before the book starts. She is a strong person, but with her she carries a lot of pain.

The second book in the series has a competition attached to designing the next book cover and I intend to try my hand at this by adapting my Annabel into Alice. To do this I will pose her in the foreground against a disturbing background of London in disrepair.
Below are some images I will work from to form the background;

Robin Silcock

I am a Second Year Games Art and Design student at Norwich University of the Arts. After exploration of a number of roles in my first year, I am now looking to graduate as a 3D Artist with applicable skills in Maya, Mudbox, ZBrush and Photoshop. I understand that my skills in this field are not there yet - but I aim to achieve this goal through consistently working through the programs in my University and Personal Projects. I love to be busy - I have always had a lot of things on my plate since the age of 7 where I successfully balanced school with Ballet, Tap, Horse-Riding, French, Piano and Singing Lessons! In the same fashion, my university schedule is just as hectic and varied; I am a Peer Mentor to first year students, Student Rep for Second Year, and President of the Enterprise Society. Like I said, I love to be busy! I am a Games Hippie - so to speak - I believe that Games if designed and harnessed in the right way, will be able to help solve many of the global issues we have today - even if it starts off in a small way. Just look at the positive effects that Facebook and Twitter have already had... When navigating my blog;
  • Works in Progress - This section is a constantly running account of all my current projects - personal and for university. It will contain reference images and website links and sometimes less than coherent posts, so be prepared!
  • Finished Pieces - This is where you will find my more polished artwork. Looking for help with Maya? Check out the posts tagged "Maya How-To's"
